Capsicum annuum, commonly called chilli peppers or bell peppers (depending on the cultivar) are perennial shrubs in mild winter climates, but in temperate areas, they are annuals. Some are ornamental and others bear edible peppers. Feed with a slow release or organic fertilizer formulated for vegetables. The plants are extremely varied with a green to totally white variegation on the foliage as well as the peppers. The flowers are white-cream or purple. The peppers can be green, yellow, orange, black or red. Some have a mild flavor, while others are so fiery that they’ll burn your tongue. Chances are that if they were sold for use as a decorative plant, they were treated with insecticides at the production facility and should not be used for culinary purposes.Although perennial, they are primarily grown as annuals.
