New Zealand Flax

Phormium sp.

Description

Phormium tenax is a clumping, evergreen perennial with bronzy, narrow, sword-shaped leaves that grown in fans and may flower with clusters of small tubular flowers. Varieties vary in color from burgundy to yellow. Use in containers, as landscape accents, or to add texture to the garden. Also excellent in seacoast areas. Feed with a slow release or organic fertilizer formulated for evergreen perennials in spring. In containers, plant in well-draining potting mix suitable for perennials and keep soil moist, not soggy, especially in summer. Move pots to a protected area or indoors during winter frost. When pruning, cut down to the base of the plant.
