What are your favorite low-maintenance plants?

"My plant journey began with a Peace Lily—talk about drama for a newbie! I ended up killing it by overwatering, mistaking droopy leaves for thirst instead of checking the soil first (Pro tip: always check the soil!).

Turns out, it was drowning in too much water, which is a common way people kill their plants. Back then, I had no idea you could overwater a plant or what root rot was, so I started doing some research.

I began exploring different types of plants, some that could handle various light conditions and others that were easier to care for. Eventually, I ventured into tropical plants—though I still haven't mastered keeping a Calathea alive!

Fast forward two years, and I now have about 50 plants, with the number growing every week! Most of them are trailing varieties, which I've started propagating.

I wanted trailing plants everywhere, along with big, bold Monstera to create a jungle vibe against my orange walls. My longest plant is nearly two meters long and trails across the stairs.

My top three low-maintenance trailers are:

- Devil's Ivy (Golden Pothos)
- Philodendron Brasil
- Cebu Blue Pothos

These plants can handle a little neglect and reward you with fabulous foliage in bright, indirect light."

How have plants helped you overcome loss? 🪴

"It was a lovely sunny day in Saint Augustine, Florida. I could feel the salty sea breeze kiss my cheek as we posed for photos. I had just married my best friend Stephen in his hometown.

Friends and loved ones commented on how beautiful the flowers and plants were at the wedding. Surprisingly, I had picked them out that morning at a local nursery called Leonardi’s.

It seemed like the next day we were back in the hustle and bustle of New York City life. Six months later, three days before Thanksgiving, Stephen was diagnosed with stage three pancreatic cancer.

A year later, we faced both a pandemic and Stephen’s declining health. We decided to leave New York and move to St. Augustine. I was scared of all the new beginnings and uncertainties.

But I remembered that beautiful nursery in St. Augustine, Leonardi’s. I stopped in at the first chance and purchased my first few plants, which would change my life forever. I found so much peace and grace in caring for plants, just as I was caring for my husband.

In the hospital, where we spent most of our time, we would paint pottery to ease our minds and pass the time. At home, we spent time on our patio filled with plants.

Plants helped me through my grief journey—they truly saved my life. Stephen passed shortly after moving to Florida, but I cherish our moments on our plant-filled patio. Today, I love seeing those pots we painted in my plant room."
